Over 50s get back on their bikes

Sustrans’ Active Travel project in North Tyneside is encouraging over 50s to give cycling a go!

The sessions, being run in partnership with North Tyneside Council, are held weekly and participants are able to borrow bikes and helmets if they don’t have their own. The sessions began in June and around 12 people join in the fun most weeks. The aim is to build the participants’ confidence and cycling skills.

Sustrans volunteer and Bikeability instructor, Peter Weslowski, says:

“I’ve been cycling around Tyneside for many years and have been able to build up the necessary level of confidence and skill to stay safe on the road. It’s great to have the opportunity to pass on my knowledge to others so that they can enjoy their cycling, whether it’s purely for recreation or for short essential journeys.”

Sheila Etheridge attends the weekly sessions and has benefited greatly from them:

“I’ve really enjoyed the sessions and feel much happier on my bike. I’m using my bike to get places now and it’s been great cycling with the instructors to find out how to get to places in the borough.”
